Eunice Marais has been teaching dance since 1984. She is passionate about the upliftment of youth, providing extraordinary dance opportunities to young dancers from all walks of life.
Eunice retired from school teaching at Irene Primary School in 2012 (after 30 years of uninterrupted service, and serving 7 of those years as the deputy principal) and now teaches dance full time. Her studio provides Modern, Jazz, Show Dance, Hip Hop and Contemporary.
Eunice believes that dancers need to be versatile and exposes her dancers to a wide variety of Teachers and choreographers.
Professional awards include a National Education Award on ‘The Use of Dance and Drama’ in Education. She has visited Timbuktu (Mali)- twice as part of an education delegation and on the second occasion taught dance workshops in various schools in the capital, Bamako, as well as in Timbuktu.
Career highlights include a commission by SA Tourism to teach the Diski Dance to a World delegation of dancers in Poland in preparation for the 2010 World Cup. Five of her dancers had the privilege of working with choreographer Nadine “Hi Hat” Ruffin from New York City. They performed on stage at the World Cup Closing Ceremony with Shakira and Freshly Ground, and were invited to perform with them at the Sony Convention. In 2012 Eunice was commissioned by Forever Living (UK) to choreograph a show for the African Convention which was held at Sun City and in 2016 she was responsible for coordinating the entertainment for the Forever Living, Global convention at the Dome.
Eunice is the trainer of Vice World and World Champions (2010 – 2017). Eunice Marais School of Dance is the only dance school in South Africa to have produced Hip Hop world champions in the Solo, Duo, Small group, Formation and Production sections.
In 2014 Eunice, passed the Advanced SABOD Modern Teachers’ Exam and in 2018 passed her International Dance Organisation, (IDO) Jazz, Modern & Contemporary and Hip Hop adjudicator’s exams.
In 2018, her dance school won numerous awards at the first ever World of Dance South Africa competition and 55 of her dancers qualified to attend the WOD competition in LA.
Also in 2018, Her studio, EMSD, brought home 32 trophies from the Dancestar Croatia and were the only South African team to be placed in the Top 3 positions at the prestigious gala event.
Eunice has produced and directed the following musicals, in association with Dalro: ‘The Wiz’; ‘Macbeth – The Rock Opera’; ‘Timbuktu’; ‘High School Musical’ and ‘Suessical The Musical’. Corporates and TV Commercials abound and Eunice’s dancers have performed locally and with international groups.
Eunice trained under Anna Nell: (RAD Ballet), Madeleine Rowland (IDTA modern) and Carol Coetzee (SABOD Modern & Jazz). Eunice has 34 years of dance teaching experience, and has been an associate member of the SADTA Stage Branch since 1984 (now known as the S.A. Body of Dance).
In 2007 Eunice was elected as Vice President of the South African Body of Dance, and in 2018 was elected onto the National Executive Body of DanceSport South Africa, with the portfolio, Director: ‘Women in Sport’
Eunice has been married to Alex for 31 years, has a 25 year old son who works in New Zealand and 22 year old twin daughters who are currently doing their internship in Biokinetics.
